چکیده

In the ROSAT Bright Survey (RBS) we have almost completely optically identified the brightest ∼2000 high-galactic latitude sources from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalogue (1RXS). A small number of sources has empty X-ray error circles on optical images. ROSAT HRI follow-up observations of RBS1223 (=1RXS J130848.6+212708), a soft object with extreme X-ray to optical flux ratio, have confirmed a relatively bright X-ray source, whose position could be determined to an accuracy of 1.6 arcsec (90%) due to the presence of a nearby, X-ray detected bright star. Deep Keck R-and B-band images of the field were taken, but the refined X-ray error circle remains empty to a limiting magnitude B ∼ 26 m. With an X-ray to optical flux ratio of log(f X /f opt) > 4.1 this object is almost certainly an isolated neutron star, similar to the two so far best-known examples RX J1856.4–3754 and RX J0720.4–3125. We discuss limits on the number of similar objects in the RBS catalogue.

Discovery of 5.16 s pulsations from the isolated neutron star RBS 1223

The isolated neutron star candidate RBS 1223 was observed with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer aboard the Chandra X-ray observatory on 2000 June 24. A timing analysis of the data yielded a periodic modulation with a period P = 5.1571696

A New Isolated Neutron Star Candidate ⋆

We report on the identification of a new possible Isolated Neutron Star candidate in archival ROSAT observations. The source 1RXS J214303.7+065419, listed in the ROSAT Bright Survey as RBS 1774, is very soft, exhibits a thermal spectrum well fitted by a blackbody at T ∼ 90 eV and has a low column density, NH ∼ 5 × 10 20 cm −2. Catalogue searches revealed no known sources in other energy bands c...

An Optical Counterpart Candidate for the Isolated Neutron Star Rbs 1774

Multiwavelength studies of the seven identified X-ray-dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs) offer a unique opportunity to investigate their surface thermal and magnetic structure and the matter-radiation interaction in presence of strong gravitational and magnetic fields. As a part of an ongoing campaign aimed at a complete identification and spectral characterization of XDINSs in the optical ban...

A Probable Optical Counterpart for the Isolated Neutron Star Rx J1308.6+2127

Using a very deep observation with HST/STIS, we have searched for an optical counterpart to the nearby radio-quiet isolated neutron star RX J1308.6+2127 (RBS 1223). We have identified a single object in the 90% Chandra error circle that we believe to be the optical counterpart. This object has m50CCD = 28.56 ± 0.13 mag, which translates approximately to an unabsorbed flux of Fλ = (1.7 ± 0.3)× 1...

A Coherent Timing Solution for the Nearby Isolated Neutron Star

We present a phase-connected timing solution for the nearby isolated neutron star RX J1308.6+2127 (RBS 1223). From dedicated Chandra observations as well as archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data spanning a period of five years, we demonstrate that the 10.31-sec pulsations are slowing down steadily at a rate of Ṗ = 1.120(3)× 10 s s. Under the assumption that this is due to magnetic dipole torques...
